Through Football
The Big Goal was launched in January 2024 and is an award-winning industry led campaign in partnership with The Street Soccer Foundation,. It has fused the dynamism of the ICT Channel with the immense power of football to make a big difference – aiming to drive positive social change by helping 1,600 vulnerable young people off the streets and into work, education or further training – and out of homelessness.
The Street Soccer Foundation is a nationally acclaimed charity that has been tackling youth homelessness since 2015 with the support of professional football clubs and community organisations across The Premier League and English Football League (EFL).
The Street Soccer Academy is the flagship programme supporting homeless and vulnerable youth and is the No.1 football-led project tackling youth homelessness in the UK.
Put simply, the Street Soccer Foundation exists to help others through the power of football, and we will continue striving to achieve as greater positive impact as possible through partnerships and collaborations to achieve our mission.
The Street Soccer Academy is delivered nationwide in partnership with clubs up and down the country and is the No.1 football-led project tackling youth homelessness in England.
The Academy is a 10-week personal development training programme providing a combination of Football Coaching; Mindset Training; and Soft Skills Development Workshops.
The programme is for 18–30 year olds who are currently experiencing homelessness but will also include young people deemed at risk of becoming homeless, such as ex-young offenders, long-term unemployed and NEETS (Not in Education, Employment or Training).
The aim is to motivate participants to improve their lifestyles and to enhance communities nationwide by empowering others to believe in themselves. To help young people build confidence and self-belief, and to improve their physical health and mental well-being.
The goal is to help programme participants learn not just for knowledge, but for positive action, to help change their lives for the better through the power of football.
Academy
Sponsorship
Upon graduation, participants receive a certificate of achievement on completion and are supported in transitioning to the next phase of their lives, whether that be continuing education or further training, securing a work placement or job, or finding and achieving stable housing.
Immediately following course completion, Academy graduates are also invited – and fully funded courtesy of your sponsorship – to attend a National Football Tournament hosted by the Street Soccer Foundation, at prestigious venues such as the likes of St George’s Park and the London Stadium. This becomes a true platform to inspire and always creates lifetime memories for all involved.
Academy graduates will also be able to continue receiving support even after completing the programme. This includes opportunities to develop their skills further through The Big Goal Mentoring Programme, as well as engaging with your company for any offered work experience, internships or apprenticeships – if this is something you can facilitate and would like to do. Companies interested in hiring Academy graduates can connect with the Foundation to discuss opportunities and receive support in facilitating employment placements.
Through the Street Soccer Foundation’s National ‘Club Community Organisation’ (CCO) network amongst professional football clubs across the pyramid, graduates are offered continued support which can also provide access to other programmes and resources. This helps graduates maintain the momentum they gained during the Academy programme and ensures they have a safety net as they navigate their next new pathways.
The Academy programme has a proven transformative impact on participants, helping them to gain confidence, improve their mental health, and develop essential life and employability skills. Many course graduates go on to secure further education or training. Some will also obtain employment within 3-6 months of graduating the programme. By also addressing previous relationship breakdowns, a percentage of young people are also able to secure stable housing following course completion.
Fundamentally, the vast majority of those who complete the Street Soccer Academy significantly improve their life prospects and reduce their risk of future homelessness.
