When people first hear about a Street Soccer Academy, football is often the first thing they think of. But across our clubs and cohorts, it quickly becomes clear that the real impact of the programme goes far beyond the pitch, writes Jade Fialo, Head of Academy Operations, Street Soccer Foundation.
At the heart of the Academy is the environment being created each week by coaches, mentors and participants together. Sessions are designed to be safe, supportive spaces where young people feel comfortable showing up as themselves, often at a time in life where confidence, trust or stability can feel difficult to find.
Personal Challenges
While football plays a huge role in bringing people together, the classroom and workshop elements are just as important. They create space for conversations that many participants may not normally have the opportunity, confidence or environment to engage in. Whether that’s around confidence, wellbeing, future goals, communication or personal challenges, those discussions are a huge part of the journey.
What makes the difference is the way coaches use their skills and experience to encourage participants to open up gradually, without pressure or judgement. Across the network, we continue to see coaches building strong relationships within their groups, helping individuals feel listened to, valued and supported week by week.
Speaking Honestly
For many participants, simply feeling heard can be powerful. Small moments like contributing to a discussion, supporting another participant, or speaking honestly in a workshop can represent significant personal progress.
That’s what makes every Street Soccer Academy unique. Football may bring people through the door, but it’s the people, the conversations and the sense of belonging around the sessions that help create lasting impact.
